Aspen Bedding Aspen is the only safe wood bedding that can be used. Do not use Pine or Cedar they are mildly toxic and extended exposure can lead to respiratory infections and allergic reactions. Aspen is fairly cheap, but be careful. Sometimes it is worth the extra buck to buy a better brand. Always check the bags for dust content, check all sides, top and bottom. If the bag has a lot of dust in it, look at the other bags to see if they have less. Pine Bedding There are lots of sites online that say pine is bad. It is and it isn't. It really depends on the quality of the shavings. Pine is okay to use if it is dust-free and kiln dried. Most pet shavings are kiln dried. However, few brands actually remove the dust. Use at your own risk. Cedar Bedding Cedar bedding is harmful to gerbils. Cedar is very "fragrant". Its strong smell was used to mask the smell of rodents. However, when the fragrant smells are mixed with acid in the urine it irritates the nose and lungs of gerbils. This over extended use will lead to upper respitory infections. This bedding should never be used with any small animal, including gerbils.
