  • Tank Toppers
Aquariums can be expanded by adding a tank topper. These toppers allow for deeper bedding and more space to run around in. ~murphybuddy09
  • Plastic Tray
Avoid using cages with plastic trays. Gerbils can chew holes through the plastic and escape.
  • Don't Put Fingers in Cage
Never stick things through the wires. This includes food, fingers, or toys. Be mindful of young children and other pets who might be near the cage.
  • Gerbilarium
This is a popular european style cage with multiple levels built into the tank. If you are handy it is possible to build one yourself. ~spacegirl

Aquarium Tank

The best enclosure for gerbils is a glass aquarium. Aquariums are very easy to clean. After dumping out the contents it can be wiped out with a chlorox or alcohol wipe. The solid sides prevent gerbils from kicking bedding out.

The standard 10 gallon tank can comfortably house 2 gerbils. A 15 gallon tank is more spacious. For groups of gerbils (3+) each gerbil needs atleast 5 gallons of space. A trio shouldn't be housed in anything smaller than a 15 gallon, but a 20 Gallon Long is also suitable.
