Moonstone Gerbils

Breeder of Mongolian Gerbils and Southern Flying Squirrels

  • Chewing on the Bars
Gerbils will chew on the metal bars. This can be annoying to listen to, and nothing you can do will get them to stop.
  • Plastic Tray
Avoid using cages with plastic trays. Gerbils can chew holes through the plastic and escape.
  • Don't Put Fingers in Cage
Never stick things through the wires. This includes food, fingers, or toys. Be mindful of young children and other pets who might be near the cage.

Wire Cages

When choosing a wire cage, be aware that gerbils love to dig and they will kick their bedding out of the cage. You can place the cage inside another tray, tub or box to catch the bedding.

Wire cages with metal trays are more durable than plastic trays. Plastic can easily be chewed through, and should be avoided for that reason. Finding cages with wire trays can be difficult, since most hamster cages aren't designed that way. Try looking for a rat cage.

Make sure the wire spacing is narrow. A few gerbils do pick up a habit of chewing on the metal bars. This may be annoying to listen to, but is usually not harmful.

Also never feed gerbils through the wires. This is a very bad behavior to teach your gerbil. They may learn that anything that comes through the wires is a treat, and will immediatly bite whatever it is, even your finger. If an unsuspecting child were to stick their fingers in the cage they might recieve a nice bite.
