Adopting Squirrels

Squirrels breed twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. The squirrels are taken away from their mothers before they are weaned. This means that during the first month you will be responsible for finishing the weaning process. The pups will need 3-4 feedings during the day, which will taper off as they get older, and start to eat more solid foods.

Squirrels make great pets that form strong bonds with their caretakers. They are very smart and easily learn their names. Squirrels also live very long lives, about 10-15 years.  Consideration should be taken when adopting squirrels as to changes that may occur in your own life (college, marriage, children, retirement, deployment, moving out of state).

I do not recommend southern flying squirrels as pets for young children. Children have the tendency to snatch and grab, which could hurt the squirrel. They have a very delicate and fragile bone structure.  Squirrels are not domesticated like other small animals (guinea pigs, gerbils, rats, or mice.) They can bite. For this reason I do not recommend them as pets for children, nor should they handle them unsupervised.

Older teenagers can make good squirrel owners. However, teenagers lives will change rapidly over the lifespan of a squirrel. Teenagers may go to college, get married, have children, join the army, or a multitude of things that can interfere with their ability to keep a flyer as a pet.

Squirrels are $250 each, with a $50 deposit. I adopt out singles and same sex pairs only. I only adopt out to people who are residents of states where they are legal to own, with the exception that a person possess a USDA exhibitor license or other state/federal permits.

Before squirrels can go home I require proof of adequate housing, diet, and other supplies on the shopping list.
