The process of weaning your new flying squirrel pup should be rather easy, assuming you acquired your pup from a breeder. Mostly because the grunt work of teaching the squirrel how to use a syringe has already been done for you. If your pup is a wild orphan, please contact a wildlife rehabilitator in your local area. Be extremely careful when feeding your baby squirrels their milk. They may look like and act like they are starved, they may even try and take the syringe from you, but do not let their eager to eat attitude influence the rate you push the milk through. Milk should come out at about 1 drop every 2 seconds. Practice this before feeding to get a feel for the amount of pressure you will need to apply. Every 30 seconds or so, give your baby a moment to catch their breath and finish swallowing. Squirrels can't vomit. Pups can and will over eat if fed too fast. This can aspirate, which causes the milk to go into their lungs. Pups will cough and spit up milk, either out of their nose or mouth. This is very dangerous and can lead to aspiration pneumonia. Take your time while feeding them, it is part of the bonding process.
Feeding Schedule: Always provide fresh fruit and staple diet. Week 1: 3-4 feedings a day about 3-4 hours apart. Week 2: 3 feedings a day about 4-5 hours apart. Week 3: 2-3 feedings a day about 4-5 hours apart. Week 4: 1-2 feedings a day, morning and night.

Weaning Your Pup Hand feeding is a simple way to build a strong bond with your baby flyer. While feeding talk to them, praise them, and stroke them lightly. Taking your time before, during and after feeding will encourage your squirrel to love and trust you.
